A first look at the Manipravalam dictionary index cards
Suganya Anandakichenin
A couple of decades ago, the late and lamented Pandit Varadadesikan (EFEO, Pondicherry) worked with a few colleagues towards producing a Manipravalam dictionary. The project apparently got shelved when Shanti Sadana’s Glossary of Historical Tamil Vaishnava Prose (upto 1800 AD). Vaiṇava urainaṭai: Varalāṟṟu mur̲ait Tamiḻ ilakkiya pērakarāti (2001) was published. The index cards were misplaced, presumed lost for two decades, until one day in April 2024, when they were discovered at the IFP and brought back to the EFEO. During this talk, we will have a first glance at these index cards and witness the kind of meticulous work that has gone into preparing them.
Suganya Anandakichenin (affiliated with the Universität Hamburg) mainly works in the fields of Vaiṣṇava literature and theology in Tamil and Manipravalam. She was recently awarded a grant from the Endangered Archives Project of the British Library to preserve and photograph a collection of palm-leaf manuscripts in Tamil Nadu.
